About
Bernie Sanders was born in 1941 in Brooklyn, New York City. Both of Sanders parents were born into Jewish families and Bernie was as well raised into the religion. After graduating from high school, Sanders attended Brooklyn College and later switched to the University of Chicago where he graduated with a bachelor in political science; during this period both of his parents passed away. While he was in college, Sanders was very active in the school’s political clubs and he took this momentum into his later life where he participated in many marches and protest for equality and peace. From 1981-1989, Sanders served as the mayor of Burlington; he later continued his political career as a member of the House of Representatives from 1991-2007. In 2013-2015, Sanders served as the chair of the Senate Veteran’s Affairs Committee and in 2015 he assumed the position in the Senate Budget Committee.
