Buttigieg was born in South Bend, Indiana as an only child. His father studied to be a priest before becoming a professor of literature at Notre Dame, his mother also taught at Norte Dame. Buttigieg was valedictorian of his senior class and attended Harvard as a major in history and literature. He graduated in 2004 and was awarded a Rhodes scholarship. Buttigieg worked as an investing intern while still in college in Chicago and in 2009 he became an ensign in the Navy Reserve where he worked in intelligence and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2014. He became mayor of South Bend, Indiana in 2011 at the age of 29 and in 2014 he was reelected, winning by over 80%. He is a Christian baptized in the Catholic Church by his parents and is now a member of the Episcopal Church. He became multi-lingual in his quest to acquire non-translated knowledge and is the first openly gay presidential candidate for the Democratic Party.

On the Issues
- Climate Change
Buttigieg aims to implement the Green New Deal and to recommit to the Paris Climate Agreement. He wants to transition to living more energy efficient.
Buttigieg supports Medicare X and believes in Medicare “for all who want it.”
Buttigieg believes that women should allowed access to all services and he aims to repeal the Hyde amendment.
- Social Security
Buttigieg has not released any strong stance on social security.
Buttigieg supports lowering college debts and creating affordable education.
- Gun Control
Buttigieg aims to disarm domestic abusers and ban military-style assault weapons. He also believes that the gun industry should be held more accountable and advocates for a nationwide gun licensing system.
Buttigieg aims to modernize immigration laws and end family separation at the border. He wants to create an easier path to citizenship.
Buttigieg supports repealing the tax cap on the wealthy.
- Criminal Justice
Buttigieg aims to end mandatory sentences for specific crimes and wants to legalize marijuana. He advocates ending the death penalty and reducing the use of solitary confinement.
- LGBTQ Rights
Buttigieg wants to pass the Equality Act and reverse the transgender military ban. He aims to enforce non-discrimination provisions of the Affordable Care Act and reverse over-representation of the LGBTQ community in the criminal justice system.
- Foreign Policy
Buttigieg supports Israel and feels that the country should pay more attention to the intelligence agencies.
