About
Ton Steyer was born June 27, 1957 as the son of a teacher and lawyer. He went to Buckley School and Exeter Academy for his lower education and then attended Yale University where he was the captain of the Yale College soccer team and studied economics and political science; he later received his MBA from Stanford Business School. Steyer worked at both Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs before he became a partner and a member of the Executive Committee at Hellman and Friedman. In 1986, Steyer created the multi-billion dollar business, Farallon Capital, yet in 2012 he stepped down from his position in the company to focus on improving and advocating alternative energy. Throughout the early 2000s Steyer and his wife created multiple businesses and groups including OneRoof Inc., Beneficial State Bank, TomKat Ranch, NextGen Climate, One PacificCoast Foundation and the Fair Shake Commission on Income Equality and Middle Class Opportunity. They also signed The Giving Pledge which promises to give half their income to charity during their lifetime. During Obamas second election, Steyer helped raise support and funds for his campaign. He has gained experience in politics not through government positions but through his advocating and fundraising for political candidates.

Steyer feels that the US has become overly reliant on sources of energy such as fossil fuels and coal and advocates moving towards clean and renewable energy. He has come out against Trump supporting the Keystone XL oil pipeline.

Steyer supports “Medicare for all who want it” and a single-payer healthcare system. He has also supported a California bill that requires drug companies to notify people of price increases.
